Before we get into 2023, there were a few things I wanted to share that happened late in 2022 that I did not post in the 2022 section of this website .
First and foremost...Harold Reed and his brother Ron have owned and operated R&R SPEED and MACHINE SHOP for over 50 years. Harold unexpectedly passed away on the afternoon of November 30, 2022, not long after doing some work at the shop. Ron, Harold and later Kevin have helped me with my cars since 1975. Harold was a heck of a dedicated racer as well as dedicated to the shop. For Carol and I, he was a great friend and will truly be missed.

John Sullivan, a racer who lives in Montgomery, Alabama, gives our team a great place to keep our car. John has been out of racing for a number of years and has been patiently waiting to get out with his car. This year he has been able to do that. He started with testing at Montgomery Motorsports park, then ran match races at Cottonwood Motorsports Park South of Dothan Al., North Florida Motorsports park at Fountain Fl. and a big trip to Maryland International Raceway for a Funny car Choas race.
I have been supporting the "Southeastern Drag Racing Association" for a number of years, even though they do not run our class. I have always been interested in the tracks that run weekly throughout the south. This closely-knit organization with Johnny Jordan as their president supports and recognizes the tracks and the many racers that run these tracks. This past year I was nominated to become a member of the "Southeastern Drag Racing Hall of Fame" and I was inducted into the special "Hall of Fame" group of racers, an honor that I deeply appreciate. This induction happened at their yearly banquet in Dothan Al.

2023 SEASON

Looking back at 2022, after the Gator Nationals we made a decision to hold on the season and test until we could get the car more competitive. In initial testing at Capitol City Motorsports Park at Montgomery we experienced a fire. The fire set us back in our testing and put us back to "square one". Now that we have made repairs and got all of our safety equipment repaired and updated we will continue our testing before attending any NHRA Nationals or Regional events. We will go back to Capitol City Motorsports Park and start our testing for this season as soon as the weather allows us to. On Saturday, January 28th Ben Willis, Capitol City Motorsports Owner/manager, has Mike Wells, NHRA Division II tech man, coming to the track to get 2023 chassis certification done and we will get our chassis certification for 2023 taken care of.
Our goal is to test several times and resolve some of our issues and then attend the first Regional event in Indy May 4-6. Hopefully we then can move forward during the 2023 NHRA season.
For the 2023 season our crew will stay intact with Crew Chief Bruce Shuck and wife Rose, Luke Smith and wife Lynn, and Clutch Man Jay Weems. Follow us as your time allows and I will update this site as progress and testing results come available.

I have been asked about our testing and what are we trying to accomplish or results we are looking for. First looking back before the "Covid years" we were quaifying in the bottom half of the qualfied field at most of the events we were going to. Now as we try to come back out in 2022 and 2023 the 5.60's we were running will not qualify us at any of the NHRA events. Because of the cost of travel...lodging..etc.. going and trying knowing that the car is not running the numbers will not cut it these days. So we test at home and slowly look for improvements. What are we looking for? Improvements in ET from the starting line throughout the run. Our best run to date... starting line to the 60 ft. ET. .978..to the 330 ft. ET..2.539 ...ET to the 1/8mile (660 ft.)..3.75 204.91MPH ..ET to the 1000 ft. 4.804 and final 1/4 mile ET 5.695..... Now what we need to just Qualify in the bottom half of a 16 car field.

Paul and Linda Shaw, close friends of Bruce and Rose, came up from Orlando to help us with the car at the 2022 Gator Nationals. Due to the bad weather things did not go as planned, but they hung with us to the very end. We all enjoyed their company and I enjoyed meeting them. I also appreciated their willingness to help with anything we asked of them. Hope we get to include them in our future plans.

Our Best ET
0-60 ft. .987
0-330 ft. 2.539
0-660 ft. 3.751
0-1000 ft. 4.804
0-1320 ft. 5.695
ET range (in seconds)
we need to shoot for
.954
2.380
3.550
4.600
5.400
It is quite easy to see we have a long way to go to catch up with today's competition. To need .29 of a second improvement is a big task and making this big of an ET move will not happen over night..
Hopefully we can cut that .29 in half with initial testing at Capitol City Motorsports Park this spring.
